Approximately 10:00 a.m. SMUD Rebate Check to CalPERS for Data Center Energy Savings Efforts Rob Feckner:
I would like to take a moment of Personal Privilege and ask Deputy Executive Officer Stephen Kessler to provide some background on a special check CalPERS is about to receive from SMUD. Stephen Kessler: I'd like to share a story that spans several areas of CalPERS: our Investments Office, Information Technology Services Branch, and our Building Operations. CalPERS Alternative Investments Management or AIM, is responsible for investing in domestic and international Private Equity transactions, which are investments in the securities of companies and partnerships that are not publicly traded. These investments include venture capital, growth capital, and buyout financing. Through American River Ventures, a venture capitalist that focuses in growth companies in the Northwestern region, CalPERS AIM Group invested in SynapSense, a Folsom based Small Business specializing in wireless sensor network solutions for monitoring data center temperature and humidity environments. Upon discovering that data centers often consume the most power in commercial buildings, our AIM Group introduced SynapSense to our Information Technology Services Branch. Last year our IT Branch contracted with SynapSense to assess our Data Center¡¦s environment. The SynapSense Wireless Green Data Center Solution was installed in CalPERS Lincoln Plaza West Data Center, providing environmental monitoring and energy efficiency modifications to regulate air temperature and humidity. As a result of this effort, CalPERS was successful in significantly reducing the energy consumption, thereby increasing the operational effectiveness of the CalPERS Data Center located in Lincoln Plaza West. The actual energy savings for CalPERS over the baseline period was 19.5 percent, which represents projected annual savings of approximately 932,000 kilowatts; a reduction in the yearly carbon footprint emissions by nearly 297 metric tons; and projected annual savings of approximately $86,000. While CalPERS and the environment will benefit year after year from the reduction in energy consumption and the associated costs, we are also eligible to receive a one-time rebate associated with the remediation effort. Now that¡¦s what I call a win-win-win situation. I would like to recognize people involved in this outstanding effort, and ask that they stand when I call their name: From the SMUD Board of Directors, Nancy Bui The President and CEO of SynapSense, Peter Van Deventer Cheryl Beninga Managing Director of American River Ventures Nick Dedier, energy consultant Dave Merwin and Jesus Arguellas from the AIM Group for introducing the SynapSense folks to Teri Bennett, our Executive over Information Technology Kim Malm of OSSD and Jon Gonzales and Chris Schempp of Colliers for making the necessary construction changes Mark Marshall, Terri Hern, Al DeHaze, and Neeraj Chauhan of CalPERS Information Technology Services Branch for managing this effort, and All the CalPERS staff who helped in the implementation. Please join me in recognizing these individuals. (leads applause) And now, I would like to call Nancy Bui from SMUD¡¦s Board of Directors to present the $79,881 rebate check to our CalPERS Board President Rob Feckner and Finance Committee Chair Tony Oliveira. Since SynapSense was instrumental in introducing us to SMUD's rebate program, let's have Peter Van Deventer join us for the presentation. |
